I was sifting through my clothes the other day and, although I’ve long been aware of my propensity for black and other dark colors, I noted the distinct absence of yellow in my repertoire.
What is it about the color yellow that I’ve avoided for so long?
For one thing, yellow is an attention-grabber.
Nothing says “Hey, look at me!” like a bright and bold sunshine yellow shirt or outfit.
Another thing I realized was that, years ago, I realized that yellow may not be the most flattering color for my skin tone.
As fair-skinned as I am, I figured I’d need a tan to rock yellow.
Rather than find a way to make it work, it would seem I’ve just been avoiding it all these years…
Then, the other day when I was shopping online for some cheap basic crop tops for layering and exercising, I threw caution to the wind and opted for one in yellow.
Dangerous, I know.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that yellow didn’t make me look washed out or childish… just a bit sunny.
With spring and summer around the corner, I’ll probably be sporting yellow a bit more, and here’s why maybe you should too.
Fear Not, You Too Can Wear Yellow!
See below for style tips on how to wear yellow clothes for spring and summer:
Just a Pop of Yellow
If you’re a pseudo vampire like me, trust me, you can still wear yellow!
This need not be a traumatizing transition for you and the people in your life either…
Start small and ease yourself into it with a bright yellow accessory like one of these:
A necklace, scarf, or hat is less of an investment than a key wardrobe piece, so you shouldn’t feel as much commitment anxiety.
Yellow looks especially sharp with black, white, denim, and violet, so I’m sure you can figure something out.
Mix in more yellow pieces over time so you stay true to your style and, more importantly, comfortable in your skin.
When you’re ready to take it to the next level, try…
Matching a Yellow Bag & Yellow Shoes
So you’ve gotten more comfortable with a pop of yellow, have you?
Maybe you’ve already picked up a yellow handbag along the way!
Either way, your next challenge will be to wear two yellow items at once – trust me, you’ve got this.
This is definitely a spring/summer color, so there’s no time like the present to buy your first pair of bright yellow shoes.
Matching your shoes and your handbag is a classic styling hack, but you can match a pair of bold yellow shoes to any accessory really.
Just be sure to get them in the same shade of yellow – You may not get the same aesthetic effect pairing mustard yellow with sunshine yellow.
The Yellow Shirt Outfit
Here’s where things get real.
Commit to a bold yellow top now and it will serve you well in the coming months.
It could be a crop top, a sheer blouse, or a loose-fitting tunic, but whatever it is, it should be YOU.
We’re sampling exciting new colors here, not forcing you into silhouettes you just plain don’t like!
A yellow shirt outfit works with black pants of course, and it looks surprisingly clean paired with white too.
Yellow on denim makes me think of the 90’s for some reason, but I personally love that.
I would advise you to avoid pairing a yellow shirt with red pants in case you evoke a little too much Ronald McDonald imagery, but other than that you should experiment freely.
Little Yellow Dress
Opting for a yellow dress is a lot like wearing your hair platinum blonde –
People can’t help but turn to look at you, and they’ll stare a little longer too.
A nice tan will help your yellow dress pop even more, but pale girls shouldn’t be afraid to wear one either.
In my opinion, the color yellow looks best on dark skin, so black girls take advantage and make that melanin pop!
Groovy Yellow Pants
For the most confident among us, yellow pants are perhaps the most fun you can have with your work dress code without technically doing anything wrong.
Not to mention, these will make a great statement piece for events, photoshoots, or even just drinks with the girls.
Wear your yellow pants outfit loud and proud – high-waisted with a slim tucked button up blouse, low-rise with a casual white tee shirt, or even flared for that uber 70’s vibe.
However you decide to wear yellow in your outfit, one thing is for sure: You will be noticed!
Do you have a favorite yellow piece in your wardrobe? How do you wear it?
Let me know in the comments below, I’m always looking for new ways to wear this bold color.
